Cougars girls soccer completes undefeated season, captures first TAPS Championship since 2013

History was made Thursday afternoon at the Providence Christian School of Texas soccer field.

In an attempt to finish with a perfect 12-0 undefeated season, and bring home the TAPS championship trophy, Good Shepherd’s girls soccer team rose to the occasion, accomplishing both feats with a thrilling 5-3 victory over Shelton School.

The Cougars built a strong 4-2 lead into halftime. When Shelton trimmed the deficit midway through the second half, eighth grader Brynn S. scored on a free kick minutes later to seal the win.

“This season was very special for so many reasons,” Good Shepherd head coach Brooke Roney said. “To finish the season undefeated is something the girls should be very proud of. There were a couple of games during the season that we went down a goal or two, but the team never gave up. The girls kept fighting in those games and their determination to win put us back on top! It truly shows the belief they had in themselves and their abilities as a group! We couldn't be more proud of them!”

When the season began in November, one of the biggest challenges was getting a team formed. With not enough interest amongst seventh and eighth graders, Roney, and assistant coach Caitlyn Hawkins, were compelled to open tryouts to sixth graders. This made it possible to complete the roster and play this winter.

“The entire season our team worked hard every day in practice with every new concept and drill we threw at them,” Roney said. “We pushed them technically and tactically in practice. We found the best position for every girl on the team where she felt comfortable yet could also make an impact. That is ultimately what led us to our success this year.”

The Lady Cougars win ends a long postseason drought of 11 years as 2013 was the last TAPS soccer championship before Thursday’s prolific victory.
